Expected on October 18 on the streaming service, this new series has just unveiled a trailer… far from convincing.

Between remake and new program

More than twenty years after the release of the British version by Ricky Gervais, which inspired the cult American version with Steve Carell, The Office is now entitled to an Australian rereading.

This is the fifteenth localized adaptation of the program, which has seen remakes in Germany, India, Poland, Chile, Saudi Arabia… and even France, among others. The Office released in 2006.

The American version of The Office aired from 2005 to 2013.

This The Office Australian is not, however, an entirely remake, and while scenes are similar, the story promises to be new and adapted to the considerations of the 2020s, as the official synopsis presents:

“Hannah Howard is the general manager of Flinley Craddick. When she learns that her branch will be closed to allow for remote work, she goes into survival mode and makes promises she can’t keep in order to keep her work family together.”

We must admit that we are not very convinced by these first images. If the uninhibited tone, the adaptations of the characters and the “post-Covid” story promise a renewed show, none of the jokes really hit the mark. We will wait to see the final result to judge, but optimism is not there for the moment.

The series was developed by screenwriter Julie De Fina (Aftertaste) and director Jackie van Beek (What We Do in the Shadows), and the first season has eight episodes.

Australian comedian Felicity Ward (seen in Time Bandits And The Inbetweeners 2) plays the lead role of Hannah Howard. She is supported in the cast by Edith Poor, Steen Raskopoulos, Shari Sebbens, Jonny Brugh and Josh Thomson.

Note that in parallel with this series, a sequel to the US version is currently in development by its creator Greg Daniels. This one, entitled The Paperwill take place in the same universe but will be centered on original characters.
