OpenAI has just unveiled its in-house ChatGPT app for iPhone. It’s a small revolution that should not fail to eclipse the many counterfeits present on the App Store.

The chatbot can be installed on iPhones for free, from the App Store. The Android app is still not available.

Plenty of third-party applications that claim to offer the classic version of ChatGPT, based on the OpenAI API. These often free services sometimes do not hesitate to suck up users’ personal data.
This widespread mess, however, seems about to end. Thursday, May 18, 2023, OpenAI announced the arrival of its official application. A first version is available only on iPhone and in a restricted list of countries, excluding France – which may recall the case of Bard, Google’s AI. As for the classic web version, the app uses the GPT-3.5 model for free users and GPT-4 with the ChatGPT Plus subscription.
ChatGPT on iOS: well-designed ergonomics
To work, “OpenAI ChatGPT” requires at least version 16.1 of iOS. The developers of the Californian startup have focused on ergonomics and ease of use of AI. OpenAI promises a better user experience, with answers generated faster. According to the company’s official communication, ChatGPT is no longer a simple virtual assistant, it is a real alternative to web searches.
Classically, the application uses the history of past conversations on the web version. Synchronization is automatic between all devices.
The iOS version, however, may have virtual throttling due to Apple’s strict content moderation policy. The rules of the Cupertino giant specify in particular that the content ” defamatory, discriminatory or mean-spiriteds” just like the “ fake news » are prohibited within the applications available on the store. However, ChatGPT is sometimes the victim of hallucination and presents information that may be defamation.
Advanced voice recognition
The current version of ChatGPT for iPhone includes an unexpected and bold feature: Whisper. Behind this enigmatic code name hides the OpenAI neural network dedicated to voice recognition. Formed on more than 680,000 hours of multilingual data, the tool makes it possible to transcribe lyrics with great precision, whatever the accent and lexicon used. The system is able to recognize a slew of languages, even with pronounced background noise.
Chatting with ChatGPT thus becomes even easier and more intuitive. Just speak to his phone and the AI will respond almost instantly. OpenAI plans to deploy the application in new countries in the coming weeks. An Android version is also in the works and should arrive “ Soon “.
