The Olympic champions of the day: Flawless triumph for Italy

The best for the first time

Italy’s curling team won the gold medal in the mixed doubles competition at the Beijing Olympics. Stefania Constantini and Amos Mosaner beat Norway’s Kristin Skaslien/Magnus Nedregotten 8:5 in Tuesday’s final and celebrated their eleventh win in eleven tournament games. It was the first Olympic medal for Italy in curling.

An Italian duo did not take part in the mixed premiere in Pyeongchang in 2018, Skaslien and Nedregotten had won bronze four years ago. This time Sweden prevailed in the small final. Almida de Val and Oskar Eriksson beat Great Britain (Jennifer Dodds and Bruce Mouat) 9:3 in front of IOC President Thomas Bach. (sid)
