The OnePlus 12R accompanies the OnePlus 12 with the false air of a flagship killer

OnePlus’ encrypted series are traditionally available on the European market. It is therefore no surprise that we discover the OnePlus 12, made official in December in China, a few weeks after Qualcomm unveiled the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chip that powers it. On the other hand, the R-stamped models were until now only sold on the Indian market. The brand nevertheless chooses this year – it must be said that the space left by Oppo gives it the necessary room for maneuver – to launch its two smartphones on the Old Continent, the OnePlus 12 and the OnePlus 12R, therefore.

This OnePlus 12R is not lacking in interest given its price: it has, like the OnePlus 12, an Amoled screen (6.78 inches this time), displaying 2780 x 1264 pixels, and offering both brightness high (up to 4500 nits in HDR) and a refresh rate of 1 to 120 Hz, thanks to the use of LTPO 4.0. Under its hood, the smartphone hides Qualcomm’s high-end chip from 2023, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 – which gives it compatibility with WiFi 7 -, here flanked by a generous dose of RAM (16 GB). Its storage amounts to 512 GB. Another positive point, the 12R is equipped with a 5500 mAh battery, compatible with 100 W charging (wired), which should give it good autonomy. It should be noted that the smartphone runs Android 14 with OxygenOS 14; it will benefit from four years of Android updates, and five years of security patches.

However, we see some compromises when we compare this 12R to the OnePlus 12. If it promises power, it promises to be less efficient in terms of photography, making do with a main IMX890 sensor (50 Mpx) flanked by a wide-angle (f/1.8), an 8 Mpx sensor accompanying ultra-wide-angle optics, and a 2 Mpx macro module. It also loses the Hasselblad stamp, and also ignores wireless charging and complete waterproofing, to which it prefers IP64 certification.

Available in blue or gray, the OnePlus 12R focuses on the advantage of its price. It is in fact announced at €699 in its only 16/512 GB version, playing for example in the league of a Pixel 8 or a Galaxy S23+. It will be marketed from February 13 in France, while a Genshin Impact edition is expected from February 28.
