Forest fires are currently raging in the south-west of France. And these exceptional events by their magnitude, but also their gravity can be seen several kilometers above our heads.

The extreme temperatures crossing the country this summer, coupled with an unprecedented drought, are causing gigantic fires in the South West. The Gironde and the Landes are particularly affected. Over the past few hours, an additional 7,400 hectares have been reduced to ashes in these two departments. The flames even reach several meters in height, which makes the work of firefighters very complicated.

A drama observed from space

This week, Météo France published a photo that allows us to better understand the scale of the fires. Indeed, the latter are visible on the satellite images. The French meteorological service specifies in passing that the fumes leave both in the direction of the Atlantic and the Mediterranean. The fires currently underway in the Jura also seem to appear on the photo in question.

Alas, these disasters should not be stopped immediately. Only heavy rainfall will be able to help firefighters bring the fires under control. If the observations from space are magnificent, the danger on dry land is, for its part, very present.
