As part of Opel’s massive electrification, the Crossland and Insignia will go zero-emission. Other models are planned later.
As with the vast majority of car manufacturers, there will be a lot of changes in the coming years. In particular, the will of the public authorities to green an industry now considered too polluting. With stricter standards governing CO2 emissions as well as incentives for customers to switch to zero-emissions, brands must therefore largely electrify their range.
This is particularly the case of Opel, which recently announced its ambition to become a 100% electric manufacturer by 2028. A very strong ambition for a firm which will then play the role of pioneer within the Stellantis group, then that all of the group’s brands will be connected by 2030. A major development for the German firm, which already has a few projects.
Two greener models
Already equipped with several trendy models, even 100% electric with the Corsa-e and Mokka-e, cousins of the Peugeot e-208 and e-2008, Opel intends to go even further. Indeed, the German firm has just confirmed that two new zero-emission vehicles will soon join the range. These are the Opel Crossland and Insignia, the first two in a long series.
Based on a CMP platform and expected in 2024, the first will therefore have an electric motor, in addition to internal combustion alternatives. It should then inherit the 136 horsepower engine, associated with a 50 kWh battery. The new generation of the Insignia will make its debut in stride and will be based on the new STLA Large technical base, developed by the Stellantis group.
A new Manta in the boxes
That’s not all, because a 3rd model, this time completely new, has also been announced by Opel. This is the Manta, announced a few months earlier by the Manta GSe Elektromod concept. For the time being, the technical information has not yet been revealed, but it should adopt a sportier behavior than the other models.
Finally, in 2023, the electric version of the current Opel Astra will land, while the following year, it will be Grandland’s turn to go zero-emission. However, we will have to wait a little longer before we know everything about these two highly anticipated models.
