DTwo Americans who helped Carlos Ghosn flee Japan in 2019 have returned to the United States after spending 20 months in Japanese prisons, their lawyer Paul Kelly confirmed to AFP.

Michael Taylor, a 62-year-old former US Special Forces member, was taken into custody in Los Angeles with an expected release date of 1er January, according to the Federal Bureau of Prisons website.

His son Peter Taylor has finished serving his sentence and is reunited with his family in the state of Massachusetts.

In July 2021, Michael Taylor was sentenced to 24 months in prison and his son Peter Taylor to 20 months in prison by Japanese justice.

The two men had admitted to having helped the former big boss of Renault and Nissan Carlos Ghosn to leave Japan at the end of December 2019, hidden in a large box of audio equipment to escape checks at the airport.

Ghosn out of reach

Mr. Ghosn was at the time on bail in Tokyo, with the prohibition to leave Japan pending trial for alleged financial embezzlement when he was at the head of Nissan.

The father and son were arrested in May 2020 in the United States and then extradited to Japan in March 2021 after nine months in pretrial detention. During their trial, they apologized, saying they regretted their actions.

By residing permanently in Lebanon since his flight, Mr. Ghosn remains out of reach of Japanese justice, Lebanon does not extradite its nationals. The 68-year-old Franco-Lebanese-Brazilian is also concerned by various legal investigations opened in France.
