The Paris Stock Exchange ended with a small decline of 0.16% on Tuesday, at the end of a session with reduced trading volumes and a sparse agenda to start the year.

The flagship CAC 40 index fell 12.32 points to 7,530.86 points. On Friday, it ended 2023 with an increase of 0.11% on the session and a gain of 16.52% for the year.

Philippe Cohen, portfolio manager at Kiplink Finance, notes that the “market is inconsistent” due to low trading volumes. “There are few operators on the trading floors today,” he reports.

Only 2.4 billion euros were traded on Tuesday in CAC40 index securities, compared to 3 to 4 billion euros for a typical session.

The Parisian rating was notably pulled down during the day by the decline in the luxury and spirits sectors. LVMH finished down 1.44% to 723 euros, Kering 1.49% to 393.05 euros and in cosmetics L’Oréal lost 1.52% to 443.80 euros.

Pernod Ricard lost 2.63% to 155.55 euros and Rémy Cointreau 2.74% to 111.85 euros.

“Small adjustments are made,” observes Philippe Cohen, but “the market is looking for excuses to take some profits,” he adds.

The agenda is also still sparse. The only indicators of the day, the PMI indices showed a further contraction in manufacturing activity in France, the euro zone and the United States in December.

“The week risks being a little slack, from Thursday we will have some macroeconomic elements which could feed the markets,” predicts Mr. Cohen.

Services PMIs are due on Thursday. On Friday, the monthly report on the American job market will also be scrutinized by investors, as will the first estimate of inflation in the euro zone for December.

On the bond market, the interest rate on the French government bond continued to rebound, after hitting its lowest in a year on December 27: the 10-year maturity, which is the benchmark, showed 2.59 % around 6:00 p.m., compared to 2.56% Friday and 2.40% Wednesday December 27.
