This weekend, Parisians were called upon to vote on the future of self-service electric scooters in Paris. The result is clear: 90% want them to disappear. Abstention was also record.

This may be the end of a 5-year complicated relationship between self-service electric scooter services and the city of Paris. On Sunday April 2, Parisians were invited to vote during a vote on the future of these services in the capital of France.

This citizen vote must decide on the renewal of the contract authorizing the three private operators currently in service, Lime, Tier and Dott, to deploy their scooters in the capital.

The counting took place in the evening for a final conclusion: 89% of voters voted against self-service scooters. The city of Paris will therefore ban these services on its territory.

A record abstention

Despite long queues observed in some borough town halls throughout the day, there was only one polling station per borough, the ballot was marked by very high abstention. Indeed, only 8% of voters turned out for the vote, for 92% abstention.

This fact should have no impact on the result. Anne Hidalgo, the mayor of Paris, pledged purely and simply respecting the result can we read from AFP.

The end of self-service scooters in Paris?

As is often the case, the citizens’ vote here is only of an advisory nature. The last word goes to the town hall of Paris. With such a result, it is difficult to imagine that Anne Hidalgo will not follow the word of the 103,084 people who took the path to the polls, even if the turnout was particularly low.

The three private operators concerned by this decision had mobilized in recent days to communicate on the importance of this vote for their future. Lime, Dott and Tier will now have to prepare for a future ban on Paris. This is the first capital in Europe that should take such a decision.

It should be noted that the circulation of scooters held by individuals is always perfectly authorized. Only the services of free-floating are called into question here.
