In 2004, Mel Gibson’s “The Passion of the Christ” was released in cinemas and became a sensational success. It grossed $612 million on a budget of $30 million. A sequel was only a matter of time and it was actually supposed to be released in 2024, on the film’s twentieth anniversary.

Gibson and “Braveheart” screenwriter Randall Wallace, who also worked on the first film, have been working on the sequel for years. Six versions of the script were created, and recently there was only talk of two scripts that might be brought to the screen.

But as Gibson and Wallace continue to develop the project and are still unsure about which version they want to film, filming continues to be postponed.

The resurrection as an “acid trip”

Gibson is sure that the story cannot be told linearly, instead his narrative jumps through time, which in one version of the script still happens in a fairly conventional way. However, Gibson compares the second version to an acid trip, as other realms, such as hell, are also shown here.

What is certain is that Jim Caviezel will return as Jesus for the film, the rest of the cast is not yet known. At the end of 2023, Caviezel revealed, according to The Cinemaholic, that “The Passion of the Christ 2” will consist of two or even three parts and, if Gibson is satisfied with the script by then, it may be shot in Rome and Mexico in 2024.

“The Passion of the Christ 2” will probably have significantly less brutality than its predecessor. It just remains to be seen whether a new generation of Christian film fans is willing to read the entire film using subtitles, after all, in “The Passion of the Christ 2” only Latin, Aramaic and Hebrew are spoken.
