Just before a young Colombian woman with long brown hair grabbed it, a smile on her face.
This little humorous sketch is the work of content creator Digital Bromad (more than 520,000 subscribers on TikTok), whose name takes up the concept of “digital nomad”, this teleworker in search of greater comfort of life than the stranger. Except that here, by changing horizons, this traveling developer is looking for something more.
On his feed, he gives advice for getting in touch with pretty women in Colombia, but also in the Philippines, Thailand, Brazil… Destinations widely popularized in the community of “passport bros” (“brothers with a passport”, in French), of which Digital Bromad is the pack leader. These are men from Western countries taking advantage of the attraction exerted by this document on young women in search of a better future as well as their strong purchasing power, to experience sexual adventures in Latin America, in Asia or Eastern Europe.
As recalled by Salt Like Tribunethe term “passport bro'” is used by the African-American director Al Greeze in his documentary Frustratedin 2011. He films black Americans looking to meet women in Brazil. According to the witnesses interviewed, these men experience a feeling of downgrading when faced with black women living in the United States, emancipated, sometimes earning more money than them, and therefore supposedly less respectful of their claimed status as dominant male. Hence the publication of short YouTube videos providing advice and strategies for having relationships with foreigners. We will have to wait until 2019 for the #passportbros migrates to TikTok.

In his own country, the “passport bro” struggles to “match” on Tinder – and thumb tendinitis threatens him. He considers himself a victim of “sexual misery” caused by the “woke” indoctrination of women. Like siblings damaged by societal developments, he and his peers stick together in the face of Westerners, considered distant, contemptuous.
So, to return to a gendered distribution of roles in the couple, this great nostalgic person flies off to destinations where he believes he can still be treated with the respect that would be due to him, and meet beautiful women, raised in traditions, perceived as gentle, feminine, sexually available, and who will not mind cooking and cleaning. And regardless of the difficulties in understanding each other, inevitable between people who do not speak the same language.
