The Pixel 7a is as good in photos as the iPhone 14 and the Galaxy S23, yet twice as expensive


The DxOMark lab tested the Pixel 7a’s photography performance, and the results are very flattering for Google’s affordable smartphones.

If in terms of photography, Apple’s iPhone 14s are often considered benchmarks for the general public, Google’s Pixel 7a presents itself as an interesting alternative. Google smartphones are known for the versatility of their cameras. Whether we’re talking about images captured indoors, at night, selfies or zooming, the quality of the images rarely disappoints, the Mountain View firm was able to coordinate the software and hardware aspects of his smartphones.

The DxOMark laboratory has tested their capabilities, and the results of their benchmarks could decide the undecided in favor of the youngest from Mountain View. The Pixel 7a, despite being the most affordable of the lineup, is no exception. Indeed, the final score obtained by the Pixel 7a in terms of the performance of its cameras is 133the same score as Apple’s iPhone 14 and 14 Plus and Samsung’s Galaxy S23 and S23+.

The Pixel 7a is twice as expensive as the iPhone 14, but it is on par with the Cupertino smartphone in photography. The two devices are therefore tied for 27th position in the general ranking established by DxOMark. The quality of the photos they capture are identical, and although one or the other stand out in very specific areas, under real-world conditions, there is really nothing to decide between them.

It should be noted that in its segment, the Pixel 7a ranks 2nd, behind its big brother, the Pixel 7. Among the qualities of the Pixel 7, the testers mention as follows:

  • natural colors and the correct white balance in photos
  • effective video stabilization good exposure in photo and video
  • fast and stable autofocus
  • accurate depth estimation in bokeh mode
  • the wide field of vision for the ultra wide angle
