The successor to the Pixel 7a is expected to surpass it in many areas. How ? Using components from the Pixel 8.

A bit like a cowboy listening for the arrival of a train by sticking his ear to the rails, we feel that the Pixel 8a is fast approaching by listening to the rumors about it. They are beginning to multiply, and above all to become more precise, offering us a look at its characteristics and its design.

Today it is the turn of its insides to be revealed, and we can read a very interesting future there.

A difficult game of seven differences

Barely a month after the release of Google’s newborns, the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, Clubic already reported that their little brother would take over their feature. Nothing could be more logical for this series of smartphones, you might say. However, the Pixel 8a could well look just like two drops of water from its closest elder, except for a few details that will be difficult to spot if you don’t have the two devices side by side.

The resemblance doesn’t stop at appearance, however. According to a source within Google and reported by Android Authority, the two smartphones could have two components in common, and not just any: the screen and the processor. In the first case, we find the same definition (2400 x 1080), the same refresh rate (120 Hz), the same brightness (1400 nits), and probably the same manufacturers (BOE and Samsung). The only difference, which we were already aware of, would lie in the size of the panel, which should be 6.1 inches for the Pixel 8a compared to… 6.2 inches for the Pixel 8.

A high-performance chip for a mid-range smartphone

As for Tensor, the series of processors from Google, the G3 will once again be there, with all the performance improvements it brings compared to the G2. This should particularly be appreciable on the photo side, because in this department, the Pixel 8a does not have the new sensors of the Pixel 8, and therefore recycles those of the Pixel 7a. The latter’s skills should, however, be surpassed, thanks to much greater processing capabilities.

The Tensor G3 of the Pixel 8a should nevertheless benefit from an IPoP packaging process, thicker and less efficient than the FOPLP used by its big brother. If the difference should be visible in the benchmarks, it will nevertheless certainly be more difficult to perceive in daily life.

A difficult game of seven differences

Last point of comparison, if one were needed: the Pixel 8a should also benefit from support for DisplayPort output, recently enabled on the Pixel 8 and 8 Pro in a beta version of Android 14. If the functionality does not In its early stages, it could be the beginnings of a serious competitor to Samsung’s DeX, which would be available across the entire current and future Pixel range.

Google therefore does not seem ready to disorient us with its next smartphone. Even if all this information should be taken with a grain of salt until it has been made official, the trajectory that the Pixel 8a appears to be taking resembles that taken by the Pixel 7a, but better. 2024 should therefore see the emergence of a particularly powerful mid-range device, to the point of wondering if the Pixel 8 will really have a reason for existence. The differences between the two smartphones are a priori few, and it may be difficult to justify the purchase of the more expensive of them.

So, what is Google up to? Hard to say. Either way, users should have access to a very good cell phone at a reasonable price, and that’s all that matters.
