The place of French cinema in international SVOD offers

According to the CNC study, “the exhibition and circulation of French audiovisual and cinematographic works internationally”, 5951 different French films and unitaries were available on at least one SVOD platform internationally (outside France) in July 2022, which makes France one of the most represented nationalities internationally behind the United States. United (25,390 titles) and India (6,711 titles). France is therefore the European country for which the film offer is the richest on SVOD platforms, ahead of the United Kingdom (5,222 different films and units) and Germany (2,654 films and units).

Overall in the CNC study, France represents 6.5% of film and unit references worldwide (excluding France). France is thus the third most represented nationality (catalogues excluding country of origin), behind the United States (38.8%) and India (6.7%), and stands out as the first country of European production represented internationally ahead of the United Kingdom (5.4%), Germany (2.2%), Italy (1.9%) and Spain (1.7%).

Considering all the catalogs of SVOD platforms (including national productions), the weight of French film and unit production varies significantly depending on the territory, from 32 French film and unit references for China to 2,456 for Spain, and from 1.5% of films and singles available on SVOD platforms for China to 12.5% ​​for Romania; but also Romania (12.5% ​​market share for French productions), Portugal (11.8%), Hungary (11.2%), Spain (10.4%), Germany (6.3%), Japan (5.3%) or Brazil (6.2%) and the United States (4.8% market share).

Among the top ten platforms in terms of the number of distinct French film and unit titles, three are services deployed worldwide: Prime Video is the SVOD service that offers the most French films and unit titles in July 2022 (1,678 titles distinct) ahead of Netflix (952 distinct titles) and MUBI, which specializes in auteur cinema (736 distinct titles). Disney+, which is present in 36 of the territories studied, is thus in 41st place in terms of the offer of French films and unitaries (61 distinct titles), while Paramount+ (53rd with 38 distinct titles) or even Britbox (70th with 13 distinct titles distinct). The CNC identified FilmIn in second position; FilmIn is a Spanish platform that offers 1302 distinct titles of French films and unitaries. The rest of the ranking is largely made up of Asian platforms, whether Japanese (U-Next with 766 distinct titles), Taiwanese (Hami Video with 612 distinct titles or FriDay with 589 distinct titles) or South Korean (TVing, with 476 distinct titles). Apart from Asian platforms, the Russian platform Okko (Rambler group) occupies the ranking in 4th place with 898 distinct titles, as well as the North American service The Criterion Channel which closes the ranking with 441 distinct titles. The CNC also mentions two British platforms: Curzon Home Cinema, a platform of the Curzon group (distribution, exhibition) which devotes a third of its catalog of films and single films to French productions (33.8% excluding British productions), as well as the British Film Institute’s BFI Player platform, mainly positioned to promote heritage films (24.7% of French films excluding British productions).

The majority of French films broadcast internationally on SVOD services (58.8%) were films released in French cinemas at least ten years ago. More specifically, French heritage films (released in France at least 20 years ago) represent more than a third (35.5%) of films available on at least one SVOD platform in July 2022.

The CNC mentions a few films present on several dozen services and territories:

“Alexandria again and again” by Youssef Chahine proposed on 50 territories; “Le Transporteur” by Louis Leterrier (44 territories); “Cléo from five to seven” by Agnès Varda (38 territories).

Very few recent films less than three years old are present on an international SVOD platform: the CNC counts 199 of them, or 5.9% of the offer of French films. 9 of them benefit from exposure in more than 40 territories, all through Netflix, and reflect the diversity of French creation: “Pourris gâtés”, “Tout simply noir”, “l’Origine of the world”, “the Cloud”, “the Summit of the gods”, “Mignonnes”, “the Witches of Akelarre”, “A secret life” and “Bac Nord”. Regarding the genre of films present on SVOD internationally, the CNC states that comedies, dramatic comedies and drama occupy a predominant place and make up 71.8% of the total offer of French films .
