The portable has imposed itself among the under 30s

In 2021, 94% of the population aged 15 or over say they have a mobile phone: 77% own a smartphone, 21% another type of phone.

A transplanted telephone in his hand. Around us, the telephone has become an element of daily life. A place to chat with friends, watch movies, listen to music or check work emails. Unsurprisingly, more than 94% of 15-29 year olds have a cell phone, according to an INSEE study publishes this Tuesday, against 36% of those aged 75 or over. This age category also dominates the ranking of those who reject or filter a maximum of calls.

Overall, the equipment rate increases with the level of diploma – the rate of smartphone ownership goes from 53% to 92% between the least and most qualified – and to a lesser extent with the standard of living and the size of the urban unit of residence. For mobile telephones, it goes from 94% outside the urban unit to 97% in the Paris urban unit and for smartphones from 70% to 86%. In the overseas departments, the rate of smartphone ownership is lower than that of mainland France (67% compared to 77%), underline the authors.

At the end of 2021, according to figures from Arcep, the telecoms policeman, the average price of a mobile plan in France was 17.75 euros.

Non-quips are mainly found among people aged 75 or over (3% of them), those among the 40% with the lowest standard of living (1% of them), among single people (1%), without a diploma (2%), farmers (2%), and people residing in municipalities outside the urban unit (1%), analyzes INSEE. The absence of a telephone often goes hand in hand with non-use of the Internet.

Another point raised by this study: 9% of landline telephone owners and 1% of mobile telephone owners say that their telephone never rings.
