BRUSSELS (Reuters) – European Parliament President David Sassoli of Italy has been hospitalized in Italy with a “serious complication” related to his immune system, his cabinet said on Monday.
David Sassoli, a center-left politician, was treated in September in a French hospital for pneumonia, his office added.
“This hospitalization (in Italy, editor’s note) was made necessary because of a serious complication linked to a dysfunction of the immune system”, writes the cabinet in a press release.
David Sassoli, 65, has been President of the European Parliament since 2019. His term ends this month and he has no plans to run for a second.
Due to his illness, David Sassoli has not been able to take over the presidency of the European Parliament in recent weeks.
