The price of the Asus ROG Ally would be 800 euros in France in its high-end variant

After the publication of its price in dollars for the American market, resellers revealed the cost of the ROG Ally for the European market.

According to information provided by retailers, the Asus ROG Ally, in its most powerful version (RC71L model, AMD Z1 Extreme, 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage), would be offered in Europe at the price of 799 euros including tax. This agrees with our calculations below. Roland Quandt indicates that a less expensive and less powerful variant will appear later, but no price has yet been announced for the latter. The official launch of the Asus ROG Ally is scheduled for May 11, 2023, with availability expected to begin around mid-June.

Original article from May 3, 2023:

The Asus ROG Ally is a product that has created real curiosity among video game enthusiasts. This console-PC hybrid is positioned halfway between a gaming laptop and a Nintendo Switch, offering an interesting alternative to Valve’s Steam Deck.

While until now, it was difficult to design such a machine because of the too fair performance, AMD presented its new Z1 and Z1 Extreme chips, which are a game changer. These chips offer graphics power slightly below that of the PlayStation 5, making the Asus ROG Ally particularly attractive for gamers. The first hands-on of the ROG Ally have been published, and the feedback is encouraging. However, two important unknowns remain: its autonomy and its price.

A well-known leaker recently mentioned a price of 699 dollars for the model equipped with the Z1 Extreme chip. If this information is tempting, there are several things to pay attention to. First of all, the $700 could match the price of the ROG Ally with the Z1 Extreme chip, 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. The less powerful version, with probably less storage and less RAM, will obviously be more accessible. Next, we are talking about a tariff for the United States.

How many in France?

If we do a simplistic conversion of the 700 dollars into euros, this corresponds to 633 euros at the time of writing this article. But it would be a mistake to stop there. It should be considered that this rate is exclusive of taxes, as is often the case in the United States. You may not know it, or you may have forgotten it, but in the United States the prices are displayed exclusive of tax. For what ?

Because sales taxes (sales tax) vary from place to place. In addition to the tax-free rate, state taxes are added, sometimes county taxes, and sometimes city taxes. According to a specialist in American taxes interviewed by a website intended for expatriates, there are thus approximately 10,000 combinations. Thus, to obtain the final price, various costs will have to be added, including VAT (20% in France), but also private copying taxes and Eco-participation.

Taking these elements into account, the price in France could be around 800 euros, or even more. Although this price is higher than that of the Steam Deck (679 euros in its 512 GB version), the Asus ROG Ally could be an attractive alternative to the Steam Deck, but also to traditional gaming laptops. It remains to be seen whether this hybrid console-PC will manage to win against its competitors and meet the expectations of gamers in terms of performance, software experience, autonomy and price.
