The price of the stamp still more expensive from January 2022

The mail keeps dropping, and the price of the postage stamp goes up! La Poste announced on August 2 an increase in postal rates of 4.7% – on average – on 1er January 2022, with in particular a sharp increase in the red stamp for priority letters, which will go from 1.28 euros to 1.43 euros (+ 11.7%).

This development – of the same order as that recorded in January 2021 -, validated by the Regulatory Authority for Electronic Communications, Posts and Press Distribution (Arcep), “Makes it possible to ensure the sustainability of the universal service with high quality in a context of accelerating decline in mail volumes” transported, justifies La Poste.

The price of the green stamp – for a cover delivered in 48 hours in mainland France – will drop from 1.08 euros to 1.16 euros (+ 7.4). In addition, those who buy these two stamps online will be entitled to a 3% discount. As for the “Ecopli” – still with the effigy of “Marianne”, gray in color, for a shipment in about four days -, it will increase by 8 cents, to reach 1.14 euros (+ 7.5% ).

The “tracking” sticker, which provides information on the routing and distribution of items, priority or not, will be reduced from 48 to 50 centimes. For abroad, an “international letter” of up to 20 grams will cost 1.65 euros (+ 10%).

The prices of classic postal parcels sent to France (Colissimo) will increase at the same time by 1.6% on the 1ster January, but the package of less than 250 grams will remain at the same price of 4.95 euros.

Mail items were in free fall in 2020, each household having sent an average of 5 D + 1 mails, against 45 in 2008. Thus, the traditional mail activity suffered in particular from the health crisis in 2020, with a decrease of turnover of 13% over one year and volumes down by 18%, i.e. 1.6 billion fewer items, the 29% increase in classic parcel volumes (Colissimo) not being enough to amortize this decrease.

La Poste talks about“Tariff advantage” to evoke the price difference between the green and red stamps, which will go from 20 to 27 centimes, with the idea of favoring the “green” stamp, of no longer depending on the obsession with delivering mail to J +1 (for delivery the next day) and, perhaps, to eliminate, eventually, the red stamp.
