Nvidia has delivered its first conclusions after analyzing the melted GeForce RTX 4090 connectors. The problem would be related… to the customers.
You have probably not missed it if you are interested in hardware. Several photographs of a burnt 12VHPW power socket have been circulating, these photos point to a potential fault on the Nvidia Geforce RTX 4090. The socket has apparently overheated to the point that the plastic has partially melted.
According to Nvidia, 0.04% of GeForce RTX 4090 affected
Nvidia collected the damaged graphics cards as part of an internal investigation. In a press release, the American manufacturer reports that the problem would have been detected on 50 copies of graphics cards, which would represent 0.04% of the cards sold. It is therefore, according to them, an isolated problem.
Even better, Nvidia specifies that the problem comes from… improper installation of the graphics card. The American brand insists on fully inserting the 12VHPW connector, ” firmly and evenly in the graphics card.
Concretely, the damaged cables showed scratches on the pins of the connector which are caused by the heat generated during the connection of the connector, in the event that the connector was not pushed all the way to the bottom of the connection.

The Igor’s Lab site also delivered a conclusion. According to them, this problem would also be linked to the quality of the adapter, but also to its installation.
Nvidia is currently trying to find other ways to make sure the plug is inserted correctly. The GPU maker also announced that it has made it as easy as possible to process warranty claims for 12VHPWR connector issues and give them preferential treatment, regardless of the brand of your graphics card.
