The PS5 exceeds 20 million consoles sold worldwide

Demand is still very strong for the new generation console from Sony and the Japanese brand intends to increase its production.

Sony has sold over 20 million PlayStation 5s worldwide. The console has always been in high demand since its launch in November 2020 and sales would have passed this milestone much sooner if the tech world had not been hit by a global shortage of components. Sony plans a “significant ramp-up” of console production for the rest of the year, according to specialist media gamesindustry.biz.

“We are thrilled to share that Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has sold over 20 million PlayStation 5 consoles worldwide,” said Veronica Rogers, Head of Global Sales and Business Operations, Sony Interactive Entertainment.

“Since the launch of the PS5, our teams have worked tirelessly to deliver a true next-gen gaming console that has taken the world by storm and we want to take this moment to thank fans for their support. Your passion for the PlayStation brand is what drives us and inspires us to innovate, shape the future of gaming, and continue to create the best place to play.”

Surpass the PS4 in 2024

“For fans who haven’t gotten their hands on a console yet, please know that we expect PS5 production to increase significantly this year and are working tirelessly to ensure that the PlayStation 5 is available to everyone who want one”.

In a recent report, Sony said the PS5 took 82 minutes to sell 80,000 consoles, while the PlayStation 4 took nine days over a comparable period. Currently, the PS5 is behind the PS4 in the amount of units sold. However, Sony expects its new flagship to surpass its predecessor within two years.
