The PS5 Pro victim of a big leak, an overpowering console!


New specifications related to the power of the PS5 Pro were reportedly leaked recently. Clearly, this information generates a lot of excitement and promises impressive performance. Here’s what we know so far.

Additional information on Sony’s PS5 Pro specifications may have leaked online, including a reveal date for the upgraded version of the PS5 console. Be careful, everything that follows should be taken with a grain of salt. Nothing is confirmed about this.

PS5 Pro gives new details

We have already talked about the PS5 Pro model several times. As reported in May of this year, a Pro console would therefore be in development at Sony. Well on the ResetEra forums, a user recently posted supposed additional details and specifications of Sony’s PS5 Pro model, which is expected to be revealed in September next year. According to this leak, the Pro model would retain the Zen2 architecture used in the current PS5 model, but with a higher dynamic peak frequency. This new information also mentions “accelerated ray tracing”, something that Tom Henderson also mentioned in July of this year.

Ray Tracing and GPU Performance

We’ve included details posted on the ResetEra forums below (via RandomlyRandom 67):

  1. Zen2 Architecture and Dynamic Frequency: The PS5 Pro would retain the basic structure (Zen2 architecture) of the CPU of the current PS5, but with a higher operating frequency (speed at which the CPU executes instructions), up to 4.4 GHz. This means faster, smoother performance for games and apps.
  2. CPU cache: With 64 KB of L1 cache per core, 512 KB of L2 cache per core, and 8 MB of shared L3 cache, the CPU can temporarily store data for rapid access, improving the efficiency and speed of operations.
  3. GPU and RDNA3 Architecture: The GPU (graphics processing unit), the heart of the console’s graphics capability, would be based on the RDNA3 architecture. It would also incorporate ray tracing improvements from RDNA4, allowing for more realistic light and shadow effects in games.
  4. Accelerated Ray Tracing: The console would focus on “accelerated ray tracing”, a technique to simulate more realistic light interactions in games, making scenes more immersive.
  5. GPU performance: The GPU is said to target a frequency of 2.0 GHz, offering impressive processing capacity (measured in TFLOPs) for high-quality graphics.

A more powerful console

But that’s not all, we can also learn:

  1. Memory and Bandwidth: With 18GB (up from 16 currently) of GDDR6 memory and a memory bandwidth of 576 GB/s, the console could quickly handle large amounts of data, essential for high-resolution gaming and fast loading times.
  2. Improved Rasterization: A 50-60% improvement in rasterization (the process of converting images into pixels) means sharper graphics and improved visual performance compared to previous models.
  3. NPU XDNA2: This technology would be used to improve temporal scaling through machine learning, aiming to produce high-quality images, even when enlarged or digitally enhanced.
  4. Revelation Date: According to rumors, Sony could reveal the PS5 Pro in September 2024.
