The British sovereign wanted to support Ukrainian refugees, forced to flee their country after the invasion carried out by Russia.

Since the launch of a Russian offensive, decided by President Vladimir Putin on February 24, Ukraine is the theater of violent conflicts which force, day after day, the Ukrainian population to flee the country. Despite her duty of reserve in politics, which requires her never to take sides, Queen Elizabeth II still wanted to support the Ukrainian people, in the grip of this war which is upsetting the whole of Europe. But his gesture, very generous, was done discreetly. Indeed, it is the Disasters Emergency Committee (Disaster Emergency Committee), which brings together 15 UK charities tasked with raising funds and providing rapid emergency aid to people affected by disasters, made the announcement on Twitter on March 3.

Many thanks to Her Majesty The Queen for continuing to support the Disasters Emergency Committee and for donates generously to DEC Ukraine’s Humanitarian Appeal“, wrote the organization on its account. The day before, the DEC had launched an appeal for humanitarian aid for Ukrainian refugees. If the the amount of the donation has not been revealedthe generosity of the British sovereign was clearly hailed.

The British royal family supports Ukrainians

Queen Elizabeth II was not the only member of the royal family to show her support for Ukraine. In a statement posted on their Archewell Foundation website, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle also made a point of sending a message to the Ukrainians: “Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, and all of us at Archewell stand with the people of Ukraine against this violation of international and humanitarian law.” The parents of Archie and Lilibet, who have renounced their royal commitments and who can therefore express themselves more freely, were thus the first members of the British royal family to take a stand on this war.

Prince William and his wife, Kate Middleton, broke their silence on February 26. “In October 2020, we had the privilege of meeting with President Zelenskyy and the First Lady to hear their hope and optimism for the future of Ukraine. Today we stand with the President and all the people of Ukraine as they fight bravely for this future“, had tweeted the princely couple, who thus left their usual reserve concerning domestic or international political news. Prince William’s father, Prince Charles, also showed his solidarity with Ukrainians during a visit, on March 2, at the Ukrainian cathedral in London with his wife, Camilla Parker-Bowles, as evidenced by a photo posted on the account instagram of the couple. The day before, the Crown Prince had said, during a visit to Southend-on-Sea: “We stand in solidarity with all who resist these brutal attacks“.
