AMD Radeon vs. NVIDIA GeForce

Ever more significant on the processor side, can the question of electricity consumption also concern graphics cards ?

Coming late to the mid-range graphics card market, AMD waited for the launch of the Radeon RX 7700XT and RX 7800XT to finally give NVIDIA a hard time.

The two little news items were respectively compared to the GeForce RTX 4060 Ti and the GeForce RTX 4070 with, in both cases, an energy advantage for NVIDIA. But can’t it be otherwise?

Towards a TGP of 200 watts

Given by our colleagues from Techtesters The answer to this question is, as you can imagine, a clear and overwhelming yes. But, to achieve such a result, you have to agree to go a little against AMD’s objectives.

Basically, the Radeon RX 7800XT is presented as the card capable of beating the GeForce RTX 4070. With a TGP announced by AMD at 263 watts, the Radeon is also much more energy intensive than its competitor: NVIDIA indicates a TGP of 200 watts for its card.

Our test of the AMD solution also highlighted this: if the performance leans towards the side of the Radeon RX 7800XT – in 1 440p in particular – the energy efficiency is different, clearly in favor of the RTX 4070 .

Similar performance and efficiency

Our colleagues from Tech testers then imagined something that we will undoubtedly be keen to do in the future: as we do for CPUs, they put the two GPUs at the same level of consumption.

The Radeon RX 7800XT, which only moderately excites AMD’s partners, was therefore forced to do with a TBP running around 200 watts in order to bring it closer to the RTX 4070. Which is funny, when the two cards are like this at the same level, we obtain a substantially identical level of performance: quite schematically, we can say that the difference in 1440p is then only 1% for AMD.

In summary, we can therefore estimate that with approximately equal consumption, the Radeon RX 7800XT and GeForce RTX 4070 obtain equivalent performances, in rasterization in any case. As is often the case – and not just at AMD – the increase in performance to keep the competition at bay comes at the cost of a sharp increase in consumption.

In principle, this is nothing new and we have already seen it many times with the most high-end CPUs. The fact remains that this opens the way to many variants from AMD and perhaps slightly more sober cards to simply put themselves at the same level as the competitor.

Please note, however, it is worth remembering that when we talk about equivalent performance between the two cards, it is in 1440p, at equal level of detail and in rasterization mode. There is neither a question of ray tracing nor a focus on super sampling solutions. To meditate…
