While manufacturers of connected rings have been at peace until now, they will now have to face competition from several industry giants. This is particularly the case for Samsung and Amazfit, which plan to launch their own health rings this year.

No matter, the players already in place are sharpening their weapons by preparing the response of the big manufacturers. This is particularly the case of Oura, Finnish manufacturer and current market leader, which announced this Friday a major update of its latest connected ring, the Oura Ring 3.

The manufacturer has in fact announced the arrival of two new scores for its connected ring, now available using a simple update of its smartphone application: vascular age and cardio capacity.

Updates for new scores

Vascular age will allow the Oura application to estimate the health status of users based on heart rate analysis. Concretely, photoplethysmography (PPG), already used to measure heart rate, will also be used to analyze arterial stiffness and pulse wave speed. After the first 14 days of use, users will be able to know if their arterial health status is in line with their actual age, above or below.

For cardio capacity, for Oura, it is a question of estimating the capacity of the body and the cardiac system to pass sufficient oxygen to the muscles. This data seems to be based on VO2Max but by popularizing this data in order to make it more intelligible for users. Concretely, after a first walking exercise, users will see their score displayed. The higher it is, the more it will mean that they are in good health.

These two new data added to the Oura Ring 3 connected rings seem to attack the future Samsung Galaxy Ring, expected this summer. The boss of Oura also indicated that, despite the imminent arrival of its Korean competitor, the Finnish firm did not intend to launch a new Oura Ring 4 model anytime soon. This update also demonstrates that it is not necessary to offer new products for sale when those already available can already be enhanced through simple software updates.
