Kate Winslet as the despotic chancellor of a fictional Eastern European country? It is the tempting promise of The Regime, the new HBO miniseries. A program broadcast from March 3 on the Amazon Prime Video streaming platform, and which reveals a trailer that is as promising as it is uneasy.

Too close to reality?

These are images that may be uncomfortable for some, as they recall recent examples of politicians and countries falling into totalitarianism.

The Regime thus promises a mixture of realism and black comedy, immersing us between the walls of the palace of an authoritarian regime on the verge of collapse.

His chancellor Elena Vernham, who has become increasingly paranoid, turns to Herbert Zubak, an equally unstable soldier who will become her unlikely confidant. As Zubak’s influence continues to grow, Elena’s thirst for control will cause the palace…and the country around her to fracture.

If these images remind you of other corrosive political series, that’s completely normal. Created by Will Tracy (The Menu, Succession), the mini-series is directed by Stephen Frears, already at the helm of the biopic The Queenand by Jessica Hobbs, director of the series The Crown And The Split. A team used to power games and corridor intrigues.
