By equipping its 12S Ultra with Sony’s brand new sensor, 1 inch in size, and collaborating with Leica, Xiaomi is claiming a certain status in the photophone segment.
Photography is arguably the aspect that brands focus on the most to design high-end smartphones that will stand out from the crowd. Xiaomi should further push the boundaries when it comes to optical hardware.
A 1-inch sensor for more detailed and brighter shots
We are indeed expecting a certain Xiaomi 12S Ultra very soon, an ultra premium oriented device that will put the package on its photo capabilities. These efforts will materialize with the integration of a new sensor, the Sony IMX989, with a size… of one inch.
This huge module, which should take up a substantial place in the imposing photo block of the rear panel of the mobile, should make it possible to offer the public a formidable photophone if all the optimizations are there.
A large sensor gives the camera the ability to capture more light and more detail in scenes, resulting in less noise-prone and higher quality shots in low-light environments.
A Leica-certified camera
To really benefit from this, the Xiaomi 12S Ultra will of course have to offer software processing and adjacent technologies to match. The brand seems well off on this subject, since it has entered into a partnership with Leica, the optical expert who has already worked successfully with Huawei.
The entire photo device should consist of a main sensor of 50 mpx with optical image stabilization, an ultra wide-angle of 48 mpx, a periscopic telephoto lens of 48 mpx allowing an optical zoom up to at 5x and a ToF module.
The launch of the Xiaomi 12S Ultra is scheduled for July 4 in China. It is not yet known whether the smartphone will be available internationally. There are reports that the entire Xiaomi 12S series may be reserved for the Chinese market.
