While the new season 4 of “The Resident” continues tonight at 9:10 p.m. on TF1, the showrunner of the series returned to the death of one of the characters in the first episode broadcast last Wednesday. And justified this strong screenplay choice.

Last Wednesday, the successful medical series worn by Matt Czuchry and Emily VanCamp returned to TF1 after more than a year and a half of absence from the air. A punchy return since the first episode of this unprecedented fourth season focused on the marriage of Conrad and Nic… as well as on the appearance of Covid-19 in 2020.
Over the course of this episode, which stands out as one of the best in the series and looked back on the first months of the pandemic, viewers discovered the ravages of the coronavirus on the Chastain hospital, its staff, and the relatives of the doctors. . And it was finally in the last minutes, during the long-awaited wedding of the heroes, that fans of The Resident learned terrible news about Devon.
The young doctor played by Manish Dayal could not attend the wedding of his friends because he had to go to the funeral of his father, who died shortly before from Covid. A tragic death which promises to have important consequences for Devon in the next episodes and which, according to showrunner Peter Elkoff, was inevitable in such an episode.
“Without being thriller, we wanted to instill a sense of mystery and angst for the viewer, between Kit falling ill, Hundley being the main patient throughout the episode, and the fact that Devon’s father caught the virus”explains the thinking head of The Resident in an interview with TVLine.

“We wanted the audience to ask themselves, ‘Is anyone dead?’, and for the answer to come at the time of the wedding”continues Peter Elkoff. “That was the idea. But there was never any question of killing one of our main characters (laughs). However, we wanted it to be a character that allowed us to create an emotional shock”.
“We touched on Devon’s relationship with his parents in previous seasons, and it was clear that it was a complicated relationship. So we’re going to use all of that, and his father’s death, to further explore Devon’s private life. Devon and his emotional state in the next episodes. As well as the transition from a private hospital to a public hospital which will be at the heart of the first part of the season “.
Many changes are indeed to be expected within the Chastain hospital in the rest of season 4, now that the establishment is rid of Logan Kim. And between new faces and the departure of outstanding figures from the series, the next episodes are not to be missed.
