This Sunday, April 19, 2020, Prime Minister Édouard Philipe clarified certain gray areas on deconfinement, including the return of students to school, from May 11.

On April 13, the head of state spoke about the date of the deconfinement, scheduled for May 11. A date followed by multiple announcements including help for low-income families and precarious students as well as the reopening of nurseries, schools, colleges and high schools gradually. This Sunday, April 19, Prime Minister Édouard Philippe accompanied by the Minister of Health Olivier Véran clarified the terms of this deconfinement.

"Schools will not reopen everywhere on May 11"

After two months of confinement, the first objective is to reduce inequalities in access to education, with a return to school in physics. An announcement that had caused a lot of concern among teachers' unions. Indeed, although asymptomatic for the majority of them, children can be a vector of the epidemic.
"It is anything but serious (…). We know that it is a place of high transmission, of high contamination. It seems to be in total contradiction with the rest", reacted Francette Popineau, secretary general of Snuipp-FSU, the first primary union.

" Schools won't reopen everywhere on May 11, but we need to start reopening schools Insisted the Prime Minister this Sunday.
For the reopening, two scenarios are envisaged:

  • Schools could open faster and more widely in the least affected territories by the epidemic.
  • The reception of "Class halves" could be favored to limit the risk of contamination, with pupils who travel every other week to school. The use of larger spaces than classrooms may be arbitrated. "The use of the premises in a different way by using spaces larger than simple classes to give lessons", indicated the Prime Minister.

Namely, after having declared that the return to school would not be compulsory on May 11, the Minister changed his speech: school will be compulsory But " everybody (won't go) not immediately ". New details are expected within two weeks by the ministry.
