the return of the famous drink of the 90s

The espresso martini gives you a boost to dance the night away. But what is behind such a success from the past?

This cocktail had glorious hours during the 90s. Today, it is making a comeback. Right now, many are dressing and entertaining themselves in the same way as this period adding a touch of novelty. In recent times, the nostalgia has increased a notch by reviving the gastronomy of the time. After the reproduction of Monica’s lasagna in Friends, the espresso martini, the perfect drink for summer, is back in fashion for our greatest pleasure.

The creation of the caffeinated magic potion

It is Dick Bradsell, a bartender who worked at Fred’s Club in London, who in the 1980s, created the famous drink one evening, tells us the New York Times. Bradsell explains in a video that one day “A young model who became famous came in and said, ‘Can you make me a drink that will wake me up and then fuck me?’”. He would have prepared this cocktail to meet this surprising request. About ten years later, the mixture was starting to gain popularity. Replaced by more subtle alcohols, such as organic wines in the 2000s, it returned to the page – in its initial version – notably via two American reality shows, “Summer House” and “Below Deck”, where the members distribution were seen with espresso martinis in hand, according to the Huffpost.

But is it good or bad for your health?

An espresso martini will give you a boost and wake you up for sure. However, alcohol and coffee are two excessively dehydrating drinks. The hangover the next morning will be more severe. On the other hand, caffeine is a diuretic. You will then very quickly want to go wee.

From a purely scientific point of view, it would be better not to excessively consume this kind of drink. Researchers at Purdue University conducted a study on the effects that mixing alcohol and caffeine can have on the brain. The experiment was applied to adolescent rats. According to the results published in 2016, the mixture increases the locomotor activity of the animals in the same way as when cocaine was administered to them. In summary … do not abuse it and avoid consuming excessively in the long term.

Although caffeine has some virtues, remember that the cocktail is made from alcohol. The effect on the body will therefore be in fine relatively negative. On the other hand, a drink from time to time will not be able to hurt you, it is just necessary to correctly monitor its consumption, not to abuse it and especially not to take the wheel afterwards.
