A 100-year-old American woman is registered as a 1-year-old in the US aviation system. The fault lies in IT inadequacies.
Everyone can travel, and almost everyone still wants to travel, despite some alarming news, like the one currently surrounding Boeing. But flight recording systems can have limitations in who they record correctly. You can ask this American woman, who went from 100-year-old to baby in her local airport’s systems.
From 1922 to 2022
Her name is Patricia (she did not wish to give her last name), she was born in 1922, and flies to the United States every year. Until two years ago, everything was going well for her. But upon reaching the canonical age of 100, the former American nurse had to deal with a surprising bug at her airport.
Indeed, American Airlines’ check-in systems apparently have a limit that prevents them from validating an age exceeding 100 years. Unable therefore from 2022 to validate the date of birth of “1922”, the computer has since assigned “2022” as the date of birth to this old lady.
A repeating problem
“ My daughter booked the ticket online and the computer at the airport thought my date of birth was 2022 not 1922 » she indicated to the BBC, before adding that the problem now occurs every time she has to register. “ Same thing happened last year and they were also expecting a child and I wasn’t » she notes.
If this problem initially makes you smile, it can also have disadvantages. Patricia having, at her age, reduced mobility, being registered as a baby who can be carried by her parents prevents the airport teams upon arrival from preparing a wheelchair for her, and providing the necessary assistance with luggage. .
“ I wish they would fix the computer because my poor daughter had to carry all our luggage and clothes almost a mile from door to door » she hopes. And his next trip will take place during the coming fall. Enough to give American Airlines time to find a solution?
