The Amazon series “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” is set in the Second Age of Middle Earth and tells of the forging of the Rings of Power and the associated rise of Sauron. Sauron, in the guise of Annatar (gift-bringer), succeeds in deceiving the elves of Eregion through a clever combination of cunning, charm and professional superiority.

Sauron appears to the Elves as Annatar, a kind and benevolent being who offers knowledge and craftsmanship. He claims to have great knowledge of the art of smithing and magic. He manages to deceive Celebrimbor and the other Elves by pretending to know ways that would greatly increase their craftsmanship and power. Sauron wants to find a way to manipulate and control the various rulers of Middle Earth, and to do so he needs the help of the Elven smith Celebrimbor.

Celebrimbor was ruler of the elven kingdom of Eregion and distrusted Annatar. Nevertheless, Annatar was able to convince the smiths of Eregion to forge rings of power.

However, Celebrimbor did not know that the magic Annatar taught the smiths created a bond between the rings, allowing the wearer of the master ring to take advantage of the other ring-bearers. Because the three Elven rings were forged in secret, they are not as vulnerable to Sauron’s influence as the other rings, which went to Men and Dwarves.

Sauron (Charlie Vickers) plans to use the 20 Rings of Power to subjugate all of Middle Earth. Together with the elf smith Celebrimbor (Charles Edwards), he creates 19 of these rings, which he distributes to the rulers of the elves, humans and dwarves. But he secretly forges the One Ring, which is supposed to rule the others, without Celebrimbor knowing of his dark intentions.

As Sauron became more powerful, he wanted to find out where the Rings of Power were, captured Celebrimbor, and tortured him. Celebrimbor eventually died during his imprisonment. Eregion was already destroyed by the time of the films. In “The Rings of Power,” Celebrimbor is played by Charles Edwards.
