Amazon Prime Video has released the first two episodes of Rings of Power. In one scene, we witness a sequence which materializes the words of Gandalf in The Lord of the Rings.

On the way to Valinor
If you have watched the episode, you therefore have in mind the one-way trip that Galadriel and her company undertake across the seas, in the direction of Valinor. The small troop embarked at Gray Havens, a port founded in the early days of the Second Age. And during the journey, we see Galadriel and the other Elves bathed in an increasingly intense radiance.
Valinor is a legendary land, separated from Middle-earth by a vast ocean, where the Valar, deities (the Ainur) reside. It is also in Valinor that live the Maiar, these Ainur of lower rank, a caste to which belong Gandalf, Saruman, Radagast and even a certain Sauron. The scene of the episode is of great beauty: we literally seem to enter paradise.
Of course, Galadriel is not so motivated to join Valinor – even though it is a wish shared among her people. She is obsessed with hunting down Sauron, to avenge her brother Finrod, who fell to the dark lord — this is a certain rewriting of history, because if Finrod confronted Sauron well, Tolkien succumbed to the wounds of a werewolf.
As a curtain of light opens as the frail skiff passes, giving the Elves a distant glimpse of the shores of Valinor on the horizon, and as an increasingly enveloping song accompanies the travellers, Galadriel changes direction. ‘notice. She turns around, grabs her brother’s dagger and jumps into the water. Valinor will wait. A sister’s revenge first.

For who has read the novels of Lord of the Rings or seen the movies, you know the Elf will eventually join Valinor. He will just have to wait a few more thousand years, the time to definitively defeat Sauron. It is during this scene that we see several ring bearers leave (Frodo and Bilbo), but also Gandalf, Elrond and Celeborn.
However, it turns out that this whole scene of Galadriel’s maritime journey materializes a description of Gandalf. During the siege of Minas Tirith, capital of Gondor, the white magician and Pippin, a hobbit belonging to the brotherhood of the Ring, have a brief exchange. Pippin thinks the end is near: orcs are everywhere, the kingdom is teetering and no help is coming.

This scene is disarmingly poetic, even though the situation at this moment is critical. It is all the more poignant as it recalls the somewhat supernatural nature of Gandalf, who is not quite a man. It is undoubtedly one of the rare times, if not the only one, where, for the duration of a sequence, the story takes us beyond Middle-earth.
The prologue of rings of power moreover offers a few moments to Valinor, which the trilogies produced by Peter Jackson do not offer. We thus have a small glimpse of these verdant lands, as well as of the two trees flooding the world with their light: Laurelin, with its golden brilliance, and Telperion, which shines with silver.
