In “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power”, the dwarf kingdom of Khazad-dum is an important setting. Film fans already know the dwarf mines from “The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring”, but in the films the kingdom has already been destroyed. In the Amazon series we will now witness the fall of the dwarven kingdom!
Durin’s Bane, as the Balrog of Morgoth is called, turns the once mighty dwarven realm into a dangerous place. The dwarves can no longer rely on their wealth and must restrain themselves so as not to agitate the Balrog any further. But how is the Balrog actually awakened in the books?
The story told in the series is relatively free. It is Gil-galad, High King of the Noldor, who is interested in mithril. King Durin III, on the other hand, knows (or at least senses) the dangers deep within the mountain and doesn’t want to tempt fate. However, Durin IV wants to help the elves and will sooner or later cause the downfall of his empire.
In a way, the culprit in Gil-galad is identified in Amazon’s series. In the books, on the other hand, it was the greed of the dwarves who dug deeper and deeper to enrich themselves from the treasures of the mountain. In addition, Amazon changes the timeline, because actually Durin’s curse is only awakened in the Third Age of Middle-earth.
We’re sure to find out what happens next with the Balrog of Morgoth in the depths of Khazad-dum in the final episode of the first season, which will be released in Amazon Prime Video’s New Releases program next week. “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” Season 2 is already confirmed!
