In the fourth episode “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power”, Galadriel gazes into a palantír. In her vision she sees Númenor being swallowed up by water. The queen regent of Númenor, Míriel, tells the elf that the whereabouts of the other orbs are unknown. But what is it about the mysterious Palantíri and where do they come from?

The Noldor Elves created the Palantíri in the First Age. There is even a suggestion that Feanor, the creator of the Silmaril, also made the Palantíri. They are solid black spheres made of glass or crystal. The smallest ball is about 30 cm in size and the largest ones are so huge that one person alone could not lift them.

The palantíri are used to communicate with each other over long distances. The Master Stone, which all other Palantír can see, was on an island east of the Undying Lands. This is how the Immortal Lands can get in touch with Middle-earth.

In order to communicate with the Palantír, the sphere must be properly oriented. Depending on how you look at the ball, you only get a vision or send one yourself. So if you look at the “seeing surface” of the palantír, you get the viewer’s vision of another sphere. Alignment affects which Palantír images are sent from.

Strong spirits can decide for themselves which visions they want to carry on. However, if one looks in with an unpredictable mind, then the images are determined by chance.

Míriel and Galadriel do not know who is in possession of the palatír, which gives them a vision. But it seems to be someone who wants the downfall of Númenor. All that is certain is that Elendil succeeds in bringing seven Palantíri to Middle-earth before the island kingdom is destroyed.

We will find out in the next few episodes when the gloomy vision of the Palatír will become reality. The first season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video. There is a new episode every Friday.
