“The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” introduces numerous characters in the first two episodes. Including Theo, son of the human healer Bronwyn. The two live in a city that still has many followers of Morgoth and is probably also watched over by some elves because of this.

Like the rest of the town, Theo isn’t too thrilled about Bronwyn flirting with the elf Arondir. He is probably secretly on the side of the townspeople and sympathizes with the Morgoth followers.

The boy finds a broken sword under the floorboards of tavern owner Waldreg’s barn. The sword bears the rune of Sauron, which we already see on the corpse of Galadriel’s brother and on the anvil in Morgoth’s old fortress.

All who see the sword seem to be magically drawn to it. This creates a bond between Theo and the sword, culminating in the sword draining blood from his wound and repairing itself using some sort of blood magic. Is Theo now in the service of this sword?

Theo’s Mission and the Orcs’ Quest

The survivors of the orc attacks in the Southlands have gathered in the Elven watchtower of Ostirith. With supplies running low, Theo suggests going back to the village captured by the orcs to gather food. He is accompanied by his friend Rowan.

But they are attacked by orcs. Rowan escapes, but Theo uses his heavy grab to defend himself. He rams the hilt into his forearm to activate the fire blade with his blood. The orc screams. This sword hilt is the reason for their plundering of the villages, Adar sent them in search of this weapon.

Although Theo can be saved by Arondir and Bronwyn, the orcs and Adar now know where the weapon is.

How does the sword relate to Sauron

Since the sword hilt bears the mark of Sauron, it is clear that it is a dark weapon. Through Waldreg and Theo’s conversation, we learn that either Sauron created this sword for a faithful servant, an ancestor of Waldreg and Theo.

Waldreg has used the hilt himself and seems to be under the spell of evil. He feels the presence of the sword hilt much like Gollum felt the One Ring. Since the sword hilt bears the symbol of Mordor, the weapon is likely to play an important role in building Sauron’s kingdom.

In episode 5, Theo gives the sword to Arondir after he chooses not to follow Waldreg to Adar. Arondir recognizes the blade immediately. Hidden behind the undergrowth at the watchtower of Ostirith is a stone depiction of this same sword. The Elven Watchtower was originally built by humans following Morgoth.

Arondir knows the blade is actually a key, crafted from a long-forgotten craft. What exactly the key is supposed to open is not clear. But it is likely that it will serve to turn the Southlands into Mordor and plunge them into darkness for the light-shy orcs to dwell in.

Why does Adar want the black sword?

Adar has the orcs roam the Southlands to find the sword hilt. He hints that he doesn’t “yet” have the power of a god, so he intends to change that soon. The sword could give him that power and help him become as powerful as Sauron.

Since Arondir Bronwyn also says sword was also used to enslave the humans, that might be exactly what Adar’s aim is.

The sword is definitely an invention of the Amazon series. We’re sure to find out more in the upcoming episodes of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.
