The finale of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is now available to stream on Amazon Prime Video. There have been some revelations: Halbrand has been revealed to be Sauron and the stranger can only be Gandalf at heart, but is definitely a wizard! However, during his battle with the Mystics, the three villains become ghosts. What does that mean?

The stranger takes the chief mystic’s staff and banishes her back into the shadows. Just before the Stranger banishes his enemies, they become spirits reminiscent of the Nazgul in The Lord of the Rings movies. There the spirit form is the one the Nazgul take when in the Unseen World, that is: when putting on the One Ring.

How does the invisible spirit world work?

The Invisible World plays an important role in the creation of the Elven Rings and the other Rings of Power and was mentioned repeatedly in “The Rings of Power”. It is a world between life and death. It is the world into which the human kings who later become the Nazgul descend. They become Ringwraiths.

In Tolkien’s universe, the Unseen World exists in secret, unseen by mortal eyes. Through them, certain beings, such as the Valar gods and Maiar, can exert influence over the real world.

Although we have not yet seen the Invisible Shadow World itself, its power and importance were made clear in The Rings of Power. The stranger sends the 3 mystics back into it with his magic, while they themselves previously drew power from the invisible world to cast fire or change their shape.

So the Invisible World offers many possibilities for those who are knowledgeable. Hidden from all others, it is only through extraordinary magical items like the One Ring that a mortal can glimpse a glimpse of the Shadow Realm.

However, the invisible world does not exist in a kind of “parallel universe” detached from our reality. Both worlds are “active at the same time” and can influence each other. Like Golum when he bites off Frodo’s finger with the One Ring on it in Mount Doom, even though Frodo is invisible. It will be interesting to see how the series further establishes and explains the Invisible World in the future.

The Lord of the Rings - The Return of the King: The One Ring tears Frodo into the Unseen World several times, but the Nazgul and Sauron are able to locate him quickly as this is their domain.

Will the 3 mystics return to the Invisible World?

Since the three female mystics do not exist in Tolkien’s original, it is difficult to say why they take form in the Unseen World. They are probably linked to Sauron’s life energy, as are the Nazgul. Or, like the Stranger and Sauron himself, they are Maiar spirits bound to the Unseen World.

This could also explain why they are looking for Sauron. If their life energy is indeed linked to Sauron, their spirits could survive after being defeated by the stranger. With Sauron’s resurgence, they may be able to take form in the Visible World again sooner or later.

As of now, however, it is clear that the three have disappeared from the scene for the time being. It is also unlikely that they would later become the Nazgul, as these were once human kings who were given rings of power. Something that cannot be said of the mystics.

In the Unseen World they could first recover and then return to Middle-earth, possibly in a new form. In The Rings of Power Season 2 we could learn more about the extent and importance of the Unseen World and what impact it can have on Middle-earth and Sauron’s return.

We may learn more about the Unseen World, the Rings of Power, the Mystics and Sauron in Season 2 of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. Before 2024, however, we should not expect new episodes in the Amazon Prime Video news program.
