the rise of Tesla and Chinese brands

During the month of March 2023, sales of electric vehicles in France are experiencing significant growth. Tesla is dominating the market with a significant lead, however, Chinese automakers are entering vigorously and gaining ground.

The French car market is experiencing a further upturn with a 24% increase in new car registrations in March 2023 (compared to March 2022), according to AAA Data. Electric cars continue to rise, Chinese manufacturers are gaining ground thanks to competitive prices and the second-hand market continues to decline.

Electric car registrations increased by 54%, now representing 17% of the market. Diesel engines are declining, while hybrids (30%, +32% increase) and petrol are on the rise.

Despite the criticism leveled at plug-in hybrid cars (9%, +34% growth), this vehicle category continues to show notable growth. Consumers appreciate the flexibility offered by these models which combine electric power and traditional fuels, making it possible to reduce CO₂ emissions without fearing the range limit of 100% electric vehicles.

Among the best-selling electric cars, Tesla is experiencing the strongest growth in the French market, with 8,710 registrations in March 2023, followed by Peugeot, Renault and Dacia. The Chinese manufacturer MG ranks fifth. In total, seven Chinese players are present on the French electrified market.

Many Chinese manufacturers

The Chinese manufacturer MG, with 1,475 registrations and an increase of 161%, is approaching Fiat, which occupies fifth position with 2,022 registrations and an increase of 29%.

Although the volumes are not yet considerable for all, the Chinese manufacturers occupy a lot of space. Regarding electric vehicles, we find, in addition to MG, brands such as Volvo, owned by the Chinese group Geely (367 units), Leap Motor (19), Aiways (10), Seres (9) and BYD, which makes its market debut this month (1). As for hybrid cars, Lynk & Co (294 units) is also experiencing remarkable growth with the 01.
