The roommate of an American student killed 15 years ago has been arrested

An American woman has been arrested almost 15 years after the death of her roommate in the United States. The victim was found dead in their apartment in North Dakota.

Anita Knutso was 18 when she was killed in 2007. The girl was found dead in her apartment in Minot, North Dakota, located off the campus of the university where she was studying. Nearly 15 years after the crime, police announced last week that they had arrested a suspect, Nichole Rice, now 34.

The latter was at the time the roommate of the victim, indicates NBC News. Minot Police Chief John Klug said at a press conference on Wednesday March 16: “Although most of the detectives who worked on the scene and the original investigation have retired, we have not forgotten this case”. The chief went on to say that Nichole Rice had always been considered a potential suspect, while giving no further details on the reasons which led to her arrest, nor on a possible motive for this crime.

“I am wholeheartedly with the family”

Anita’s body had been discovered on June 4, 2007 by her father, who had gone to her house, worried that he had no news. When he entered, he found his daughter’s corpse in his room. Anita had been stabbed several times. The murder weapon, a bloody knife, had been left in the sink. A few years later, Anita’s brother also died. Their sister, Anna, told ‘Dateline’ in 2015 that he took his own life in 2013, unable to bear the pain of losing Anita. “What haunts me most about my sister’s death is that whoever killed her also killed my brother that day. After she was killed, he was never the same again.

“My heart goes out to the family,” Chief Klug said at the press conference last week. “I wish I could have solved this case sooner, but at the same time, I’m happy to say that we finally have the person responsible for Anita Knutson’s murder.” Nichole Rice has been charged with murder.
