The Russian army claims to have conquered the city of Kherson in southern Ukraine

The Russian army said Wednesday morning to have seized the Ukrainian port city of Kherson, located in the south of the country, near the Crimean peninsula.

The Russian army said on Wednesday morning that it had seized the Ukrainian port city of Kherson, located in the south of the country, near the Crimean peninsula, after fierce fighting in recent hours. “Russian army units have taken full control of the regional capital of Kherson,” Russian armed forces spokesman Igor Konashenkov said. A few minutes earlier, at 06:43 GMT, the Ukrainian mayor of the city, Igor Kolykhayev, had indicated that the locality was still under Ukrainian control.

“We are still Ukraine. We are still resisting,” he posted on his Facebook account. “Today I will try to find solutions to gather the dead, to restore electricity, gas, water and heating in the places where it has been cut. But I warn you: succeed in doing this today would be performing a miracle,” he continued.

The city and its outskirts have suffered intense bombardment in recent hours. The region of Kherson, bordering Crimea, had been attacked from the start of the Russian invasion, on February 24 at dawn. The Russian army has already seized another key port in Ukraine, that of Berdyansk, and is currently attacking that of Mariupul.
