Warning, this article contains spoilers for Season 17 of Grey's Anatomy.

Grey's Anatomy is a passionate medical series, to the point that it is in its seventeenth season! It is being broadcast and, from episode 7, a main character dies … This is Dr. Andrew DeLuca, played by Giacomo Gianniotti. The doctor is stabbed and his colleagues do all they can to save him, to no avail. We saw him die on the operating table, causing great emotion among fans.

This is only the fifth time that a main character of Grey's Anatomy passed away, and the first since Patrick Dempsey, who played Derek Shepherd, left the show. A difficult decision for the writers, as explained by Krista Vernoff, the showrunner. "This is the story that had to be told. Sometimes even we writers are just as distressed by the story as you are. And that's one of its moments.", she wrote on Twitter.

Krista Vernoff paid tribute to Giacomo Giannioti, who saw his character disappear: "Giacommo brought so much talent and heart to the role of Andrew DeLuca. At Grey's Anatomy, we mourn this character just like you. […] Giacomo remains a member of our family", she assures. As for the person, he also spoke on social networks. "There is so much I could say … But all that comes to me is 'thank you'. Thank you to all the fans who loved Deluca as much as I did. Telling this story was and is one of the coolest honors of my life ", he said.
