the senators will apply the reform

As its president Gérard Larcher (LR) had promised, the Senate will apply from September 1 new rules for the retirement of senators and Senate staff, modeled on the reform voted in the spring.

The Bureau of the Senate – the equivalent of a board of directors – voted unanimously on Wednesday to transpose the pension reform into the regulations of the Pension Fund for Former Senators and the Pension Fund for Senate Staff .

These new rules concern the gradual raising of the retirement age from 62 to 64 and the acceleration of the schedule for extending the contribution period, which will be increased to 43 years to obtain the full rate.

The application of the reform will lead to a reduction in the amount of retirement pensions received by senators by 20%, indicated the Presidency of the Senate in a press release. This amount will also be capped so that it does not exceed that of the compensation received during the exercise of the term of office.

The additional contribution for senators (40% higher than the contribution level of the general scheme) is maintained. Over time, it has allowed the constitution of provisions which allow the financial balance of the plan today.

The gross monthly amount of the parliamentary allowance is 7,493 euros, the monthly pension contribution 1,157 euros.

The supposed golden retirement of senators is a controversial subject which resurfaced during the debate on the postponement of the retirement age voted by the senatorial majority on the right.

Grard Larcher has always defended an autonomous regime, so that parliamentarians are not under direct pressure from the executive.

On the other hand, he was committed to having the Senate transpose the new rules of the reform for its own regime, as had already been the case for the previous reforms.

The actual average retirement age for senators is 72, according to the Senate. The amount of the pension takes into account the duration of the mandates carried out.
