The Exorcist Devotion (The Exorcist Believer) finally shows up with a demonic image. Will the director of the Halloween trilogy terrify us again?
After the (missed) resurrection of the greatest adventurer in cinema with Indiana Jones 5, Hollywood is targeting another monument. “The most terrifying film of all time” by William Friedkin (Cruising, Bug, French Connection…), the Exorcist. A feature film which still haunts the oldest among us and which will make its big comeback in dark rooms. And rather than bringing out yet another long version Director’s Cut Final Cut ++, the franchise is changing hands for a new film that will almost wipe the slate clean. The Devotion Exorcist is starting to reveal itself and it’s already pissing off the tokens.
A first image of The Exorcist Devotion that makes you uncomfortable
Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions have launched the promotional campaign for The Exorcist Devotion (The Exorcist: Believer in VO) with the very first image of this new film. A promo poster where we see two little girls already possessed and creepy as hell. Because yes in this feature film, which is an official sequel to William Friedkin’s masterpiece, it is two little girls who will be victims of a demon.
The production of The Exorcist Devotion trusted Olivia Marcum, who is taking her first steps as an actress, and Lidya Jewett (Good Girls). They will have the heavy task of being the next Regan, embodied at the time by the stunning Linda Blair. Tough, tough, but with luck and talent, they may succeed in hatching like Blair in his time.
Ellen Burstyn aka Chris MacNeil, who was Regan’s mother in the original, will reprise her role in The Exorcist Devotion. She will surely be there to lend her expertise and help the kids get back to normal. Or not. Joining the cast is Leslie Odom Jr., who won two Best Actor trophies in the musical Hamilton. Like Ann Dowd, seen in Heredity by Ari Aster or the series The Handmaid’s Tale and The Leftovers, Raphael Sbarge (24 hours Chrono), Okwui Okpokwasili (Madeline’s Madeline). A New Trilogy From The Halloween Director
This first image of The Exorcist Devotion is debating and it was a foregone conclusion. Some are already planning a change of clothes, while others felt like AI software was used to generate this shot. As an unconditional fan of the first film, the only one that exists, we are between the two and we will wait to see more.
This return which will thrill horror lovers, provided it is successful, will not be a one-shot. It will be a new trilogy, which erases somewhere the two old parts, directed by David Gordon Green. The filmmaker who dusted off the mythical Halloween. For better or for worse. The 2018 episode had been a great surprise, then it was the fall with the two sequels. We are therefore entitled to be very apprehensive about the final result.
For The Devotional Exorcist, Green wanted to steer clear of Halloween, which makes sense. “They have nothing to do. Halloween is a horror movie. It’s a slasher. It’s midnight madness where we have a good time at the movies and eat popcorn. The Exorcist is a very documented drama on mind-blowing facts. Spirituality, religion, mental health, family. You can bring these two works together in very different subgenres of horror, but the technical, creative approach is very different”.
But he still intends to reproduce a similar model. “I hope we do the same with The Exorcist as we did with Halloween, do something new and prove that this revisit was worth it.
