The shock of Cannes 2022 after Titanium? First images of the new Cronenberg with Léa Seydoux

Discover the very first images of the new work of the mythical David Cronenberg, The Crimes of the Future. The film is selected in Competition at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival.

After eight long years of absence from the cinema, the legendary David Cronenberg is back behind the camera with Les Crimes du Futur! His last film, Maps To The Stars, dated from 2014. The Canadian filmmaker, to whom we owe La Mouche, eXistenZ, Crash or Cosmopolis, will present his new film at the Cannes Film Festival in May.

The director finds Viggo Mortensen for the 4th time after A History of Violence, The Promises of the Shadow and A Dangerous Method.

As we can see in this enigmatic and disturbing first trailer, Cronenberg returns to his roots, again exploring obsessions seen in Videodrome, eXistenZ or Crash.

Incidentally, Future Crimes is based on an original screenplay by David Cronenberg. This was no longer the case since eXistenZ in 1999.

The story takes us to the near future. While the human species adapts to a synthetic environment, the human body is subject to new transformations and mutations.

With the complicity of his partner Caprice (Léa Seydoux), Saul Tenser (Viggo Mortensen), a famous performer, stages the metamorphosis of his organs in avant-garde shows.

Timlin (Kristen Stewart), an investigator for the Office of the National Organ Registry, follows their practices closely. It is then that a mysterious group appears: they want to take advantage of Saul’s notoriety to reveal to the world the next stage of human evolution.

This project is already shaping up to be the shock of this 75th edition of the Cannes Film Festival, which will take place from May 17 to 28.

“Surgery is the new sex”declares the character of Kristen to Viggo Mortensen, while instruments are preparing to butcher the body of Léa Seydoux. “I felt the desire to have my face cut off”she says sensually a few shots further.

The trailer ends with her character starting to rip Mortensen’s stomach right before saying: “Do you feel bad?”

Cronenberg therefore sends us a message: The Crimes of the Future may cause some fainting during the Cannes session. The French release date has been set for May 25, 2022.
