A new episode of simpsons has just been censored by the Beijing authorities.

Broadcast on the Disney+ streaming platform, this episode contained a scathing commentary from Lisa on China. What very quickly alert the censorship department of the Chinese Communist Party.

Bitcoin and Human Exploitation

The relationship between Western cultural works and China is always complicated, as evidenced by the productions of the Marvel franchise, which have only just returned to the Middle Kingdom. The authorities indeed watch very carefully over the image of their country and do not hesitate to prohibit or censor when they believe they have detected an attack. This is what just happened with an episode of simpsonsbroadcast by Disney+.

During this episode 2 of season 34 called One Angry Lisathe young nerd of the family ironically declares: “ Contemplate the wonders of China. Bitcoin mines, forced labor camps where children make smartphones, and romance. Offered on the platform from last October, it is now no longer available in Hong Kong.

The Tiananmen precedent

And this is also where the shoe pinches. Normally, through the “One Country, Two Systems” policy the CCP’s censorship should not take place in the territory of Hong Kong. Except that since the protests of 2019 and a new national security law dated 2021, creators must accept cuts in their films, when it is not the simple prohibition.

The Simpsons themselves are not their first experience in the field. Another episode had already been made unavailable in Hong Kong, episode 12 of season 16, in which the American family visited Tiananmen Square. The problem ? A commemorative plaque that appeared, on which it was written ” Nothing happened on this site in 1989 “, in reference to the silence imposed on the events which had shaken Beijing at the time.

Disney+

  • Disney classics in one place
  • Exclusive Marvel, Pixar and Star Wars series
  • 4K, HDR and Atmos at no extra cost

It was highly anticipated and did not disappoint. Disney+ is not a Netflix rival, but a complementary offer, geared particularly towards children and more broadly towards the family. The Star universe, meanwhile, remains the poor relation of the platform and will require several years of work to catch up with its competitors.
