The "Simpsons" makers have been confronted with accusations of racism for a while. Now creator Matt Groening has commented on it.

The fact that black characters and "People of Color" are also set to music by white speakers in the popular animated series "The Simpsons" in the original English is viewed by many as out of date or even as racist. In June of last year, US broadcaster Fox announced that the characters affected – specifically the Indian Apu Nahasapeemapetilon and the African-American doctor Dr. Hibbert – new votes are received. As a guest on the British radio show "Newsbeat" on BBC Radio 1, "Simpsons" creator Matt Groening (67) has now also commented on this matter.

It is true that he recognizes that "times are changing". But he himself had "actually no problem with how we did it". He explains it this way: "All of our speakers play dozens of characters each. It was never intended to exclude anyone." Nonetheless, he welcomes the rethinking and emphasizes that he stands behind the decision: "Narrow-mindedness and racism are still a huge problem and it is good to finally strive for more equality and representation."

"The Simpsons" have been on television in the US since their premiere in 1989 and are already in their 32nd season. In Germany, the yellow cult family and the other residents of the small US town of Springfield celebrated their TV premiere on ZDF in 1991, before it went to today's regular station ProSieben in 1994. The latest season has been shown there since February 8, 2021.
