In one of its most memorable episodes, Maude Flanders, wife of Homer’s eternally kind neighbor, Ned, dies suddenly after falling from the stands of a stadium. The sequence takes place during episode 14 of season 11, leaving Ned a widower and having to rebuild his life.
Although the decision to kill off the character seems bold on the part of the writers, what many don’t know is that it was caused by a behind-the-scenes conflict during production.
A SALARY STORY
In 1999, the voice actors of Simpson negotiated better wage conditions with producers. Most of the band got a raise, but not Maggie Roswell who lends her voice to Maude Flanders. From then on, the actress decided to leave the series, leading the animation studio to remove her character.
It is worth mentioning that in 2002, Maggie Roswell returned to the series, striking a new – more advantageous – deal with Fox. Obviously, Ned’s wife didn’t come back to life but Maggie Roswell was able to play the character again through flashbacks and also as a ghost.
Over the years, the actress has also played Helen Lovejoy, Mona Simpson, Elizabeth Hoover, Martha Quimby and many more.
