“The situation is disastrous” in Afghanistan, hit by a violent earthquake

The toll of the earthquake that struck southeast Afghanistan on Tuesday June 21 quickly reached one thousand dead, and it could rise further in the days to come. The provinces of Khost and Paktika, very mountainous and remote, are difficult to access. Rescuers are struggling to help the victims.

According to Sam Mort, communications manager for UNICEF Afghanistan, at least 1,800 homes were destroyed by the 5.9 magnitude earthquake in Gayan province alone. Local authorities have deployed helicopters to transport the injured to hospitals, while the UN and UNICEF are trying to deliver basic necessities to the victims by truck.
