Geneva (awp/ats) – The slowdown in the pandemic was less rapid last week compared to previous weeks. The number of new cases fell by 2% but the drop in the number of new victims is greater.
According to data released Wednesday evening by the World Health Organization (WHO), nearly 3.3 million new infections were observed in the past week. Only the Western Pacific faced a small increase.
This region continues to currently experience the highest number of new cases each week. In the other territories, the decrease ranges from 1% in Europe to 35% in Africa.
In terms of new deaths, the decline is almost 20%. It has been observed in all regions. It reached 5% on the American continent and up to more than 40% in the eastern Mediterranean.
The Omicron variant still collects almost all sequencing over a month. In total, more than 6.5 million people have succumbed to the coronavirus since the start of the pandemic. About 610 million have been infected.
