The smartphone makes us sick: new study provides the proof

The Ruhr-Uni Bochum has presented the results of a comprehensive study on smartphone use. Accordingly, mobile phones have a direct influence on our well-being – in a negative sense. However, doing without your smartphone altogether is not the best long-term solution.

Study: Fewer mobile phones, more well-being

Researchers at the Ruhr University Bochum have come to the conclusion that the use of smartphones is definitely a influence on our well-being Has. However, the relationship is not quite as clear from a long-term perspective.

A total of 620 participants between the ages of 20 and 30 were divided into three groups for the study. All indicated that they use their cell phones on average at least 75 minutes a day would use. One of the groups was instructed to go completely without their cell phones for a week. The second group was asked to reduce their daily consumption by one hour. Participants in the third group, on the other hand, use their smartphones as before.

The result: reduction and renunciation positive effects on well-being and lifestyle. Interestingly, the positive effects lasted longer in the group with reduced usage time than in the participants who did not use their mobile phones at all. Smartphone use has increased significantly

According to the Ruhr University, daily smartphone use in Germany is three hours. The number is significantly higher for young people, as the last Postbank youth digital study found out. 16-18 year olds had their cell phones in 2021 a full 6.2 hours a day in the hand. A year earlier it was 5.8 hours a day.
