The Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 is official and will shake up the affordable smartphone market

Qualcomm unveiled two new SoCs. The Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 as well as the long awaited but never arrived Snapdragon 7 Gen 1. First component of the 7 series engraved in 4 nm, like the last generations of the 8 series, the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 benefits from updated connectivity and a more powerful platform. The first equipped smartphones will arrive in the coming weeks. Honor, Oppo and Xiaomi would be the first to benefit from it.

Earlier today we published an article dedicated to the formalization of the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1, the new flagship of Qualcomm’s catalog for high-end smartphones. We’ve detailed what the changes are between the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 and its replacement. And we have also published a list of brands which, according to the foundry, should present a smartphone equipped during the course of the third quarter 2022. And there are more than fifteen. Samsung is not present, but we already know that the Galaxy Fold 4 should benefit from it.

The Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 is the first SoC of the 7 series engraved in 4 nm

The Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 wasn’t the only SoC to be made official today. There is also the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1. It’s a SoC we’ve been hearing about for a very long time. It should have been formalized at the same time as the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. But it was the Snapdragon 778G+ that replaced it. The arrival of the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 should not go unnoticed on the mid-range market (between 400 and 700 euros), offering performance and optimizations currently reserved for the high end.

First surprise: the Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 is etched in 4 nm LPE. It is manufactured at Samsung. It is the first in the 7 series to benefit from such finesse, the SD778G+ being engraved in 6 nm and the SD780G in 5 nm. The frame rate of these cores is slightly different from that of the SD778G+. Prime heart goes to 2.4GHzGold hearts to 2.36GHz and Silver hearts to 1.8GHz. Here, Qualcomm therefore emphasizes the three Gold cores which will absorb a great many tasks. Qualcomm claims that this new SoC is 20% more efficient than its predecessor in graphics, offering compatibility with Quad HD + definition. It remains to be seen whether manufacturers will take the risk of taking advantage of it.

The first smartphones will arrive before the end of June 2022

The Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 benefits from some optimizations. Its Spectra image processing co-processors can handle sensors up to 200 megapixels, up from 192 megapixels previously. Bluetooth goes from version 5.2 to version 5.3. The 5G connection speed increases from 3.7 Gb/s to 4.4 Gb/s. There is a new processor for security. The artificial intelligence engine is 30% more efficient. So there.

The Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 should very soon appear at the heart of new smartphones. Qualcomm announces that Oppo, Honor and Xiaomi have already placed an order. And the first equipped models will be made official at second quarter 2022. Either before the end of next month. And one of them should just be the Reno8 which should be official next week.
